Interesting Points Many times while reading the Bible we come accross an interesting little bit of information. By usage of the term " little bit", I in no way mean petty or trivial. These things are as powerful and profound as anything else found in the Bible. Just that not a great amount of space is required to make the point. These things by themselves are not enough for a sermon, teaching, or even an article on this or any other web-site or in a magazine. As a result they often get overlooked by those who teach and share God's Word. I feel the need to share some of these things. That is what this section of this site is for. Some of these things I have found on my own. Some of these things have been shown to me by others. If, like myself, you read and research the Bible, you too have found things such as what is shared here. If you are new to reading and researching the Bible you will no doubt find things on your own as well. It is always exicting to find things on your own. Always research it to be sure that you are reading it correctly. ![]() Psalm 138:2)" I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." ![]() Have you ever had visitors who did not know when to leave? When they do leave they are often back before you can be releived that they are gone! They are nice but you can only stand so much of anybody. You do not want to hurt their feelings, but they can not seem to grasp any polite hint you put forth. Maybe, like myself, you have been on the other end of this senario. Eventually I got the message, along with some hurt feelings. After a day or two the hurt feelings go away, especially when I remind myself, that it was I, who was loitering in their space and was too dense to get the hint. "Don't wear your welcome out". That is a popular expression that has been around for who knows how many years. Benjamin Franklin is reputed to have said," After three days, both visitors and fish begin to smell." Proverbs 25:17)" Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbor's house; lest he grow weary of thee, and so hate thee." This is one of many places in God's Word, the Bible, where we find useful and pratical advice. Though this was written several thousand years ago, like the rest of God's Word it still applies today! ![]() " Red sky at night, Sailor's delight, Red sky at morn, Sailor bewarned." As the son of a sailor, turned farmer, I heard that saying often while growing up. Good sailing weather and good farming weather, it seems, are much the same. In my lifetime I have found it to be fairly accurate. NOT 100% mind you. Most often it fails when a hurricane is passing through. No way of predicting the weather seems to be possible when this occurs. I was surprised to find the following verses while reading the Bible one day. MATTHEW 16:2)" He (Jesus) answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red." 3)" And in the morning It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but ye can not discern the signs of the times?" Farmers, sailors, nor sailing are not mentioned in these verses. However, the same basic principal is, only it is worded different. I had always thought that this method of weather forecasting originated with sailors because of the saying I heard as a child. However, Jesus is taking note of the same method in these verses. There is therefore, no way of knowing, where this method began or just how long it has been around. Much longer than I suspected! Several other important things need to be noted. 1) These verses ARE out of the context of a conversation Jesus was having with the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus simply used this method of weather forecasting to make a point. 2) Jesus DOES NOT comment one way or the other as to the accuracy of predicting the weather in this way. Hence, WE CAN NOT point to these verses and say that Jesus tells us how to forecast the weather! Jesus was, as I pointed out, simply using this to make a point in a completely different matter. Still, I found it interesting, that this method of weather forecasting was known, (only worded different), in Bibical times. ![]() I Corinthians 10:25)" Whatsoever is sold in the shambles,( MAKELLON- marketplace) that eat, asking no question for conscience ( SUNEIDESIS- a knowing with oneself) sake:" ![]() Matthew6:1)" Take heed that ye do not your alms(ELEEMOSUNE- kindness, kind act) before( EMPROSTHEM- in front of) men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father Which is in heaven." 2)" Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, thet they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward." 3)" But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:" 4)" That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father Which seeth in secret Himself shall reward thee openly." Beginning in verse one, Jesus instructs us, that we are not to do alms in front of men, in order that they may see us doing these alms. These alms are not tithes. Alms is translated from the Greek word ELEEMOSUNE- kindness, Kind act. Have you ever seen someone in a bad situation and decided to help them? It could be with money, labour, or any number of things. In this verse, Jesus tells us, that we should not do these things in front of men, so that they see plainly, without question, that we are doing this good deed. If we do, then we have no reward from our Father Which is in heaven. We are not supposed to be doing these acts of kindness so that others may see us doing these things. We should do these things because we see that they need to be done and because it is the right thing to do. Personally, when I do these things I do not expect a reward from God. If He chooses to reward me that's okay and I will accept such reward as He sees fit to give me. The reason I try to help others is because I have been helped many times by others. I know what it feels like to need help. Quite often it has been total strangers who have helped me. Therefore, if I see someone who truely needs help, I try to help them if I can. If God rewards me in some way that's just a bonus I was not expecting. If He does not, I am not disappointed, as I was not seeking a reward, I only wanted to help someone who was in need of help. Most of us do not like to ask for or receive help. It may be nothing more than pride but most of us like to think we can get what we need on our own. If we do have to have help we often feel bad about it. Several times I have taken help from someone only to have them tell everyone that they helped me. " Yea he would not have made it if I had not helped him." That always makes me feel even worse! If I had known they were going to do that I would not have taken their help! We should help those in need of help because it is the right thing to do. Not because we seek the attention of others! Therefore, our left hand should not know what our right hand is doing when it comes to alms or helping others. The only one who needs to know is God. The Bible tells us in many places that He sees all and misses nothing. Verse four says that this way our alms are in secret and that God rewards us openly for that which is done in secret. | Return Home | Our Services | On-line Catalog | FAQ Page | Contact Us | Preview one | Articles by Gary Jones | Interesting Points | |
