The Need  for Research
               Part Two

The Need for Reasearch
             Part 1

Many times I have been asked," Why bother to research? Just buy a modern translation of the Bible." Modern day translations of the Bible are not always accurate. Being accurate when dealing with God's Word is very important. I use a King James version because most of the more accurate research tools are based on the King James. Research that is done by yourself provides a much more in depth veiw of God's Word. When somebody shows me something concerning the Bible, I always research it myself before accepting it as truth. Sometimes when I research a verse or section of scripture that someone has shown me, the point they were making is no longer valid. At other times I understand the verse more clearly. Sometimes when checking the research of others, I find it not to be accurate. Not being accurate is a common mistake that we all make from time to time.
I feel conifident that my research is correct or I would not post/publish it. However, being a human being, like yourself, I too make mistakes from time to time. Also by checking the research of others you get a better grasp of the content. If you are new to research, you can, "get the hang or feel of how it is done", by checking the research of others. Then you can move on, researching the topics or questions that you have, for a greater understanding of these topics or find accurate answers to your questions.
1 Corinthians 13:3)" And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profit me nothing."
Just from reading this verse it does not appear to make sense. Is not giving your goods away to feed the poor, charity? In today's world it is, or that is how most people today would define it. The King James Bible was first published in 1611. It was translated a few years before that.
When I was a young child, if you said that somebody was gay, it meant that they were happy. Today, it usually means they are a homosexual. In the short span of about fifty years, this word has taken on a completely different meaning. Could it have been, that some 400 years ago, the word charity had a different meaning?
Most bookstores sell a book called a concordance. They sell for about $30.00. A good investment, if you are serious about studying the Bible. You look up a word you do not understand. It list all the places it was used. You find the verse it occurs in. It will tell you the Greek or Hebrew word it was translated from and usually a brief definition of the word in question. The better and more accurate concordances have Hebrew and Greek lexicons in the back of them. The Old Testament was translated from Hebrew. The New Testament was translated from Greek. If you look up the Greek or Hebrew word in these lexicons, they tell you every word that was translated from the paticular Greek or Hebrew word you are researching. You would be surprised at how many different ways many words were translated.
Now, lets take a look at this verse using a concordance. Lets begin with the word bestow. It is translated from the Greek word PSOMIZO. To feed is the immediate definition given. Looking up the word PSOMIZO in the Greek lexicon, we find that, it was translated bestow to feed one time and feed one time. I think we can all agree that this would involve selling your goods and using the money to feed the poor, or trading your goods for food in order to feed the poor.
The word goods was translated from the word HUPARCHO. Looking that word up, we find, that it was translated be 42 times, live one time, after 1 time, goods 7 times, substance 1 time, things that one hath 1 time, the things that one posseth 2 times.
" Hmmmm,"some of you are likey saying about now," I could have guessed that"! True, but now you know what you guessed or suspected is indeed true. Nobody can come along and prove you wrong by proper research because, you arrived at this conclusion by proper research, rather than guesswork.
Now, lets take a look at the word charity. It is translated from the Greek word AGAPE. The definition given is love. It was translated charity 27 times, feast of charity 1 time, love 86 times, dear one time. Now, how many of you would have guessed that?
Everywhere in the New Testament the word AGAPE/AGAPAO were translated they were translated  charity or love. I feel it safe to conclude therefore that charity is love. What type of love? The love of God. Several other words in the New Testament were also translated love. However, these other words that were translated love always refer to other types of love. The love of friends, family, money, the love of your fellow man, the love between a husband and wife, ect.

Everywhere in the New Tesyament that charity or love is translated from the words AGAPE/AGAPAO it is in reference to Gods Love. His Love for us, Our Love for Him, or utilizing His Love as we live our lives. (I Corinthians 13 for example)  Therefore, I feel it safe to conclude that charity as well as love, when translated from the words AGAPE/AGAPAO are the Love of God.

The word profit is translated from the word OPHELO . The difinition given is to profit. It was translated prevail 2 times, profit 7 times, be advantaged 1 time, be bettered 1 time, be profited 3 times. A synonym is gain.                                                                                       " And though I sell all my goods, substance, or possessions to feed the poor, and give my body to be burned, if I do not have the love of God, I gain nothing".
Now, we could have read that in a more modern version of the Bible. True, but likely not that in depth. We may have even remembered it for a day or two. From proper research however, we have a more in depth understanding of the words we researched. The word love for example. Not only did we find that charity could have been translated love, but we also found out what type of love. Also, we are more likely to remember what we have learned because, we, ourselves did the research.

The Need for Research
               Part Two

II TIMOTHY 2:15)" Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Shew is translated from the word PARISTEMI. It was only translated shew 2 times. It was translated present 9 times. If we use the word present rather than shew, it gives the verse a clearer meaning. Study to present thyself unto God, a workman ( ERGATES- Labourer) that needeth not to be ashamed,( ANEPAISCHUM- without cause for shame) rightly dividing ( OTHOTOMEO- to cut straight or right) the word of truth.
" Study to present thyself unto God, a workman that has no cause for shame, rightly dividing the word of truth."
So, we need to study to present ourselves unto God. Study what? God's Word, the Bible, of course! Study comes in handy for many other reasons as well. We are always finding things from God's Word that will work in our lives. Many times in a group conversation, or even in a one on one conversation, some other person mentions something from the Bible. Quite often it is distorted or incorrect. If you have studied what they are talking about you can clear the matter up. " Hmmmmm rightly dividing the word of truth?" Rightly dividing ( ORTHOTMEO- to cut straight or right.)
Some of the New Testament is addressed to us, as christians. Some of it is not and may not directly apply.
James 1:1)" James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting:"
Are you one of the twelve tribes of Israel? I am not, at least as far as I know. Have I learned anything from the book of James? Yes, many things have I learned from this book. Some of which I will share in future articles.
II TIMOTHY 1:2)" To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord."
I am not Timothy, yet I have learned quite a lot from reading this book that Paul wrote to Timothy, Paul explains many things that were going on at the time of the writing. Some of these things are still going on today! He also offers very much pratical advise. Although the advice is not written to me, it has helped me quite a lot. Much of what would work for Timothy, will also work for Gary and yourself as well!
I CORINTHIANS 1:2)"Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:"
No, I do not live at Corinth. I do however, call upon the name of Jesus Christ, so this book is addressed to you and I, as well as the Corinthians. If what we read in another part of the Bible, that is not addressed to us, contradicts what is addressed to us, it can not directly apply to us.

The Need For Research- Part 3

Romans 15:4)" For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope."
Aforetime? Hmmm, afore what time? The book of Romans was written after Jesus Christ lived on earth, died, was resurrected from the dead, and asscended into Heaven. Hence, the Old Testament, is what is being referred to in this verse. It was written before the time of Jesus Christ. The primary subject of the Old Testament was the promise of the comming of Jesus Christ,( from Genesis 3:15 foward). God laid out many Prophecies whereby the people would know by these signs, that Jesus Christ truely was the Messiah ( Saviour ), that God had promised them in the Old Testament. Jesus Christ did indeed fulfill ALL of these prophecies. These things were written so, that the Jews of the Old Testament would know that they had a Saviour comming and what signs to look for in Him. By these signs, ( Prophecies concerning Him ), they would know that He was indeed the promised Messiah or Saviour.
Many of the people in the time period that the book of Romans was written, had also lived in the time period of the Old Testament. Many of the adults of that time period had been alive before Jesus Christ was born, which would have been the Old Testament time period. The book Romans was written less than thirty or so years After Jesus Christ had asscended into Heaven, thus many of these people had been alive before He was born. The books referred to as the Gospels, ( Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John ), are about the Life, Ministry, Death, Resurrection, and Asscention into Heaven, of Jesus Christ. These four books tell of the fufilment of those Prophecies. Jesus Christ did indeed fulfill all of these Prophecies.
Apart from the Prophecies concerning Jesus Christ, the early history of the human race is also recorded there. Much human drama is also recorded there, ( People trying to live by the laws that God had given them, their successes, and failures). The laws that God gave the Jews to live by are also found there. The books of the Old Testament were written to the Jews of that time period to give them comfort and hope that God was going to send them a Saviour. Although the things written there may not directly apply to us, as modern day Christians, we can learn quite a lot from the Old Testament.
So, where did the Bible come from? The Bible addresses this question in several places. Lets look at a few of these verses.
II TIMOTHY 3:16)" All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness : "
17)" That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."
All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God..." So, there we have it, we see that it is given by the inspiration of God. We also find that it is profitable. What for? For doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, ( DIKAIOSUNE- rightness, justice), how to live our lives in the right way.
So, why did God give this? " That the man of God may be perfect ( ARTIOS- fitted, perfected) throughly furnished ( EXARTIZO-to fit out ) unto all good works." We can read from God's Word and perfect our lives ( verse 16). We can correct what is wrong in our lives (verse 16). When we see a fellow christian about to go astray from God's Word, and rather than, "chew them out", and likely make them angry, we can show them from God's Word where they are about to go astray. Let the Word speak for us as it is hard to argue with the Word. That also is true for self-reproof. Many times I, myself, have been at the point of going astray. Likely someone simply telling me that would have made me angry, yet I would see a verse or section of Scripture that would enlighten me as to the err of my ways and I corrected the error. We can also base our beleifs on God's Word (doctrine, verse 16). So, who did God give the Scripture to?
II PETER 1:21)" For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."
So, there we have it. Holy men of God spake (spoke) as they were moved by the Holy Ghost ( GOD ). Obviously, someone wrote down what they said. Thus, we had the Word of God in written form. The problem that we have today is that it was not written down in what we know as " modern day english" nor any other modern day language. Most of the original language was in ARAMAIC, which is basically an older form of Hebrew. Sort of like old english is to modern day english. That' s not it exactly, but it is as close as I can get to an example.
The original text was in what is known as flowing script. An example is below.
II PETER 2:9)" thelordknowethhowtodeliverthegodlyoutoftemptations
There was no spaces between words. It was also not divided into verses and chapters. There was no punctuation. Words in Italics, punctuation, verse and chapter numbers were added by man. If we take any of this out we have not taken from the Word of God as these things were added by man. Most of these men were translators, who added these things to aid in translation and make it more easy to read. Every Bible schoolar I have met will agree, that there have been mistranslations through the years, but it has seldom been wrongly translated. Both the Old and the New Testaments were translated from text that were translated from other text, that were translated from other text, ect. Each time it was translated some was lost, in most cases not by intention. The closer we can get to the original the closer we can get to what God actually said.
Another area that needs to be taken into consideration is context. Many time people take a verse or a piece of a verse to make a point. When the whole verse is read the point is no longer there. If it is a whole verse that is used then the verses that surrond the verse in question must be taken into consideration. For instance, did you know that there is a place in the Bible where it says there is no God?
PSALMS 14:1)" For the fool hath said in his heart," There is no God " , they are corrupt, they have done abominable works, they hath done no good."
There it is, right in the middle of that verse. However, when the whole verse is read the meaning is quite different to say the least. That's an example of words being taken out of context in a verse. Sometimes one must go several verses backward or foward or even a chapter or two to establish the context.
I have had a few people tell me," you are not interpreting that verse in the right way". They usually go on to tell me that only certain people are "gifted" to interpret the Bible. This contradicts the Bible in several places. They can show no clear Scripture to back up their claim.
Romans 2:11)" For there is no respect of persons with God." ( Also found in Ephesians 6:9, Colossians 3:25, and Acts 10:34.)
God does not place any of His followers above the rest of His followers. Hence, if He gives you the "gift" to interpret, He gives the rest of us the same gift or insight. If you can say a verse says one thing but actually means something entirely different than what is clearly there, then so can I or any other Christian for that matter. By doing things in this way, we will never get anywhere!
II PETER 1:20)" Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation."
The word private was translated from the Greek word IDIOS- ones own. Therefore, it is to be taken as written. Research sheds some light on what we are reading, but rarely does it change what is written. Neither you nor I have any special ability to " interpret" the Scriptures.
When one gets into more in depth research there are other helpful things to consider. However, I do not think I will go that deep on this website. If I do I will cover those things at that point. I beleive I have left you the reader, with enough information, that you can to begin to research for yourself, with the aid of a concordance, the things of God's Word. I also think you can comprehend the articles I and others post on this site.
